Leadership Role in Globalized World
From the outset of people living in the world, the attitude of one as a leader and the other become followers intensify in tremendous way. No matter where we are or who we are, every one of us has an instinct behavior to lead and control the environment with sprit of leadership. The environment we live, from small village to inter-continental level is networked and interdependent with globalization effect that has to be governed by regional and global leaders. At present time the phenomena of globalization mingles the world in cross border trade, free mobility of labor force, social, cultural and information exchange among people.
Despite being several restrictions is in effect from one country to the other, there is no serious limit to hinder the influence of globalization. Globalization is interlinked with leadership and as the cultural social, ethical and standard of people differ from one country to other, we may not adopt identical style of leadership across the country. For instance, least developed countries are characterized by low democratic process and poor economic growth coupled with autocratic leadership style. However, I believe this has to be changed and transformational leader is now a demand to various nations.
Globalization affects leadership through expand of market, utilizing of opportunities, facing challenges and competition, transfer of employee internationally and curiosity about the diverse culture and politically arena of various countries. On the contrary, various skills are required to be a global leader; for instance, adaptable to situation, executive ability, cooperation, faithfulness, resilience, steadiness and persistence. As it is written on The Sprite of Leadership by Myles Munroe (2006), ‘Leadership means discovering and serving yourself to the world.
When you do this effectively, people will call you a leader. All true leaders are simply glorified servants. Genuine leadership is not measured by how many people serve you but by how many people you serve. The greater you service, the greater you value to others, and the greater your leadership. The shortest distance to leadership is service. I personally support the writer idea in that when some one has to be a global leader, he should value to others and acts as a service man to mass.
Unfortunately the reverse is happening in the world. For instance, the existence of undemocratic system and lack of participative / consultative leadership style in most of developing country are the reasons for the absence of true leaders. In addition to this, the present time political uprising in Arab world and Africa is a good reflection of people for seeking democratic change, growth in economy, income equality and employment in which a leaders urged to serve the mass and have to meet the needs of the public.
I believe lack of concern to individual, poor commitment of leaders to transform them and giving priority to their self interest are the basic factors for weak performance of leaders. On this regard, the poor performance of leaders is a serious challenge in present world and as stated on Gurus on leadership (Mark Thomas; 2006), some of the reasons for leadership in competence are: 1. Overly political game playing 2. The unwillingness to exercise authority, . Micro-management and the obsession with detail, 4. The tyranny of subordinates as caused by an excessively abrasive set of behaviors. My argument to the above points is that it would not be the overly political game and the tyranny of subordinates are the weakness of leadership instead the misuse of the authority and the tyrant behavior of the leader are the reason for leadership failure as it is common in developing country.
Thus, my stand and criteria for global leader to be credible, honest, forward looking passion for growth, contagious on inspiring the follower, committed to principle of law, positive about the future, global mind set in culturally diverse setting, accountable to their action and persistence on the goal. At the end, with the increased sphere of globalization and various determining factors like; diversity of people, cultural effect of each country, economic integration and the influence of politics’ demand future leaders who have global perspective and have a potential to lead in the uncertain environment.
These global leaders should have a profound knowledge of countries ethics, beliefs, customs, social standards and administrative needs. I believe the required global leaders shall posses a sense of accountability, responsibility, trust, loyalty and steadiness that had sworn to the public. In addition adaptability and flexibility to change with great concern to the society and individual value supplemented with multidisciplinary perspectives and transformational leadership skills have to be an attribute of future leaders.
