America turned to domestic isolation and social conservatism because of the Red Scare. The Red Scare cut back free speech, in which the hysteria caused many to want to eliminate the communists. Some states made it illegal to advocate overthrowing the government. From 1920 to 1921 about 800,000 Europeans named New Immigrants flooded into the US. Because of this Congress passed the Emergency Quota Act of 1921 which only allowed 3 percent of Europeans to come the US. Soon after, the Immigration Act of 1924 was passed cutting the 3 percent to 2 percent.

This also ended all Japanese immigration. The US was anti-Europe and in this case they decided to isolate themselves from Europe. 2. Immigration became a big thing in the US. Europeans began flooding into the US and many were having a problem with it. The KKK reemerged again and this time fighting for America. Congress passed numerous Immigration Acts and this almost ruled out immigration. Prohibition was a long, fought cause that women supported. A Prohibition law was only for people to continue to violate it. Prohibition led to the rise in gangs. With gangs entailed murder and massacre.

Black saw the happier side if things and began making music and doing things to entertain others. 3. Many thought immigration would hurt the country. In the 1920’s, after WWI, people were anti-Europe. Immigration was only a problem now because the immigrants were coming from Europe. Immigrants were believed to not be trusted. The KKK advocated that immigrants were responsible for crime. They also believed that immigrants brought along with them ideals of communism. Immigrants were seen as a great threat to society. 4. America did not like immigrants to begin with. With the pressure put on them to “Americanize” was not true to America.

Europeans were part of a different culture. In a world with cultural pluralism, every culture would be accepting of one another. Everyone would understand what it is to be from a different culture. Everyone would accept the different laws and codes. 5. The Red Scare brought on the fear in Americans over communism. Anti-foreignism sprouted after Sacco and Vanzetti were captured and executed. It continued to thrive after foreigners began flocking to the US. The Ku Klux Klan was formed and they were anti-foreign, anti-Catholic, anti-black, anti-internationalist, and anti-revolutionists.

They felt that immigrants would never be loyal and they were responsible for most crimes. Prohibition caused tension among most everyone. It was mostly supported by women which also brought about gender discrimination. 6. Henry Ford had perfected the assembly line and was producing an automobile every 10 seconds. Automobiles provided more freedom, luxury, and privacy. Advertising became popular and used ploys such as persuasion, seduction, and sex to appeal to the people. In turn they hoped this would sell merchandise. As hoped people bought cars. Two new, but dangerous, techniques were used.

This included installment plans or credit to buy things. Both ways plunged many people into debt. 7. Movies became a pastime of the people. The first movies featured nudity which shocked the public. In turn they forced codes of censorship to be placed on these kinds of movies. A new group, labeled erotic and inappropriate, was called flappers. They danced to jazz and risque dances at that. This became known as a sexual revolution. Sigmund Freud said that sexual repression was responsible was society’s ills. African American development was of the same cultural movement.

They produced music such a bee-bopping and made it possible for the flappers to be able to dance. 8. Before WWI, people were very idealistic in what they could achieve. After the war, people learned that not everything could be perfect. They began to get caught up in music, movies, and cars. There was also a new sense of nationalism. The KKK emerged again, but only to deal with foreign issues. The Red Scare had people wanting get rid of anyone who questioned the government. This was a time for people to care about themselves and less about the small things.
