Defining the Visual Arts Essay Sample
Trying to imagine the world without art is like trying to imagine the world without air. Most people don’t realize how much they rely on the importance of art in their everyday life. Visual arts consist of much more than a painting at a museum. “The visual arts can help us give meaning to what seems meaningless and help us recapture feelings and experiences that we have once had or would like to have again” (Jewell, 2002, Chapter 10, Visual Arts—Feast For the Eyes). Visual art styles can be endless.” Visual arts are usually perceived as the arts you can see with your eyes.”(Dictionary.com, 2013) Some types of visual arts are photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, graphic design, filmmaking, interior design, electronic or technology based art, weaving or even carving. The list can go on and on. . From this abundance of choices artist can create many different works of art. Just are there are many different forms of art, there are artist of all shape and kind, each with their own vision. No two artists see things exactly the same.
Though art can be anything, not just anyone can be an artist. It is through art that we express our emotions, intellect, and ideas. All types of art basically tell a story. Although there are many kinds of art there are basically two types of art: visual art and performing art. There are many people who are masters of visual arts, they are highly evolved artists. The paintings of Raphael, Degas, Gustav Klimt, Salvador Dali, Leonardo da Vinci and Picasso are few of the great ones that come to mind in the areas of sculpture and painting. With all of the different kinds of art, performing arts is one of the much appreciated and enjoyed by people – singing, dancing, standup, comedy, drama, plays, theatre, magic shows, and opera. The artists who choose to perform these arts are all artists who have perfected their skills like: singers, actors, comics, magicians, dancers. Performance art can be like a trip to somewhere you’ve never been before. The artist attempts to transport you to where their mind is.
The end results can be amazing. In the past many cultures and civilizations were thought to be great because they were progressive in the arts. Civilizations depended upon how rich the art of that particular country or civilization was. Art was the strength and culture of an entire nation. “Through paintings, drawings, and other visual arts, we can discover worlds of experience that are all around us–or inside of us–that cannot be described quickly or easily with mere words”. (Jewell, 2002, Chapter 10, Visual Arts—Feast For the Eyes). Artists see the world differently than other people. Their minds process things and their eyes see differently than others. They attempt to show you their vision through your eyes. As a child my father gave me a children’s book about Pablo Picasso and his artwork. The book changed the way I saw things. It inspired me to learn more about art. I took painting lessons for about a year. My love of art grew. In high school I took photography for 3 years. It was my passion. It was also in high school that I began Beauty College.
It was there that I learned the art of hair design and make up artistry. Some people just have a natural gift for it; I was one of the lucky few. I have an eye for beauty. It has allowed me to make a good living and express my creativity at the same time. Most people would not consider cosmetology a visual art, but I beg to differ. If a person is skilled at their art, the dimensions of colors and light in the hair can be both beautiful and artistic. In order to be a good cosmetologist; you need a good knowledge of color, light reflection, depth and dimension. My painting classes helped to give me a good base for this kind of work and have helped me to be successful at what I do. I love the artistic aspect of my job. It helps to make the bad parts of it, not so bad Art can be symbolic of thoughts and ideas. Art can move us. The different forms of art are the feelings, imagination and creative expression of an individual. Art has no limitations or restrictions. The different forms of art will always be of help to stimulate our senses whenever we need it.
